Spring Theatre

Jodie McNee and Sarah Malin join the cast of Anatomy of a Suicide directed by Katie Mitchell in her second collaboration with writer Alice Birch for the Royal Court. Amy Cudden and John Mackay have been cast in Occupational Hazards by Stephen Brown based on the memoir by Rory Stewart and directed by Simon Goodwin for Hampstead. At The Donmar, Robert Hands plays David Jones in the much anticipated Kids Company Musical Committee directed by Adam Penford whilst at The Arcola Sara Powell plays Dr Rieux in The Plague adapted from the Gogol novel with Neil Bartlett directing alongside Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare’s Richard III with Mehmet Ergen directing. Kate Fahy and Laura Rogers have been cast in the Southwark Playhouse revival of Sam Shepherd’s A Lie of the Mind whilst Jess Murphy takes on the title role in The Duchess of Malfi in Covent Garden with director Cecilia Mundi.

Ferdy Roberts begins rehearsals for Fatherland an ambitious new project for the the Royal Exchange/Manchester International Festival about contemporary fatherhood created by Frantic Assembly’s Scott Graham, Karl Hyde from Underworld and playwright Simon Stephens. Also at the Royal Exchange Geraldine Alexander will play Lady Russell in Persuasion directed by Jeff James whilst Colm Gormley joins the cast of The Country Girls an adaptation of the banned Edna O’Brian novel directed by Lisa Blair for Chichester Festival Theatre. Meanwhile, David Seadon Young has opened in An American In Paris at The Dominion to spectacular reviews, Gavin Spokes begins performances as Mr Snow in the ENO’s Carousel, Eugene O’Hare begins previews for The Ferryman, Tom Edden opens in Arturo Ui at The Donmar and Aiden Kelly begins performances in Salomé at The National Theatre.

More Summer Screen

More Summer ScreenMatteo Garrone’s beautiful fantasy horror film Tale of Tales featuring Hayley Carmichael as Dora gets its UK cinema release June 17th.
Also, on screen catch series two of Sony’s noir-superhero drama Powers starring Max Fowler, Gary Oliver playing the guest lead of John Gulliver in New Blood written by Anthony Horowitz for the BBC and Derek Hutchinson who appears in Versailles on BBC2. Pooky Quesnel, meanwhile, plays Agnes in Living & the Dead, series starts 28 June on BBC 1 and Kent Riley is series regular Barry in ITV’s Brief Encounters coming soon.
In other production news, Rocky Marshall will return as Agent James Hill in Series 3 of The Royals, Emma Handy plays Mrs Hallows in The Worst Witch and Robert Hands shoots crime thriller Wagstaff adapted from the novels by Adam Creed and directed by Colin Teague for ITV Encore. For the BBC Richard Teverson films Call The Midwife and the highly anticipated Taboo produced by Ridley Scott and Tom Hardy, Vincenzo Nicoli, Emma Handy and Kate Maravan guest in BBC’s The Coroner alongside regular Oliver Gomm and Nitin Kundra shoots the 3rd series of Count Arthur Strong written and directed by Graham Linehan. Joe Sims and Sara Powell, meanwhile, take on guest leads in the ever popular Midsomer Murders.

Olivier AwardCongratulations to Gavin Spokes who earns an Olivier Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his role as Nicely Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls, currently playing in the West End.

Guys and Dolls also receives a nod for Best Musical Revival. Other Olivier nominations include Best New Musical for Mrs Henderson Presents featuring Robert Hands as well as Best New Comedy for Peter Pan Goes Wrong featuring Tom Edden as well as Nell Gwynn with Peter McGovern.

20160301Josie Walker will play Mrs Gogan and Stephen Kennedy Fluther Good in a revival of Sean O’Casey’s Plough and The Stars, directed by Howard Davies for The National Theatre and marking the centenary of the Easter Rising. Also for The National, Pooky Quesnel joins the cast of The Suicide in a fresh adaptation of Erdman’s original script relocated to contemporary London directed by Nadia Fall. Tom Edden will play The Good Angel in The Jamie Lloyd Company’s West End Production of Dr Faustus with Kit Harrington in the title role whilst at the Royal Exchange, Jodie McNee takes on the role of Kay in Sarah Waters’ The Night Watch directed by Rebecca Gatward. Sam Alexander returns to Hampstead Theatre in Howard Brenton’s new play Lawrence After Arabia with John Dove directing, Hywel Morgan joins the cast of the RSC’s The Alchemist directed by Polly Findlay, Natasha Gordon joins Mel Giedroyc in Simon Dormandy’s production of Luce at the Southwark Playhouse and Michelle Bonnard plays Jess in The Quiet House by Bruntwood Prize winning writer Gareth Farr at The Park Theatre. For the West Yorkshire Playhouse and London’s South Bank Centre, Carla Harrison Hodge plays Avocado and Pomegranate in two hander The Fruit Trilogy, 3 short plays from the Tony Award winning playwright of the Vagina Monologues Eve Ensler whilst over at The Birmingham Rep Sophie Stone plays the Postmaster in Artistic Director Roxanna Silbert’s innovative new production of Gogol’s The Government Inspector. Also out of London Tony Guilfoyle plays Prospero in William Galinsky’s production of The Tempest at Hippodrome/Great Yarmouth and Kate Maravan joins the cast of Phelim McDermott’s new show Opening Skinner’s Box for Improbable.

Robert Hands20160114 Theatre plays the Lord Chamberlain in Mrs Henderson Presents, directed by Terry Johnson and transferring to the Noel Coward Theatre, West End from February. Sophie Stone plays Michelle in a revival of the Simon Stephens’ play Herons at the Lyric Theatre directed by Sean Holmes. Charlotte Lucas revives her role as Ellen Tree in the critically acclaimed Red Velvet by Lolita Chakrabarti as part of The Kenneth Branagh Season at The Garrick. Josie Walker continues her run at The National as Mrs Purdy in Husbands and Sons. Peter McGovern will play Ned in The Globe’s transfer of Nell Gwynn to the Apollo Theatre, West End whilst Dan Rabin continues at The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse opening in The Winters Tale. Molly Logan, meanwhile, plays Viola in Twelfth Night director Bill Buckhurst also for The Globe. Graham Turner returns to the RSC playing the Fool to Tony Sher’s Lear in Greg Doran’s new production as well as Belarius in Melly Still’s Cymbeline. Nicholas Lumley is also returning to Stratford in Maria Aberg’s Dr Faustus and Angus Jackson’s Don Quixote.

Laura Rogers and Richard Teverson take a new production of Private Lives on a tour for Ambassadors, directed by Tom Attenborough, Penny Beaumont plays Camilla in Make Bartlett’s King Charles III touring the UK and then Australia whilst Geoff Leesley returns to PW’s An Inspector Calls. Natalie Radmall-Quirke and Chris Gordon both appear in Winter’s Tale for Cheek By Jowl touring Paris, Madrid and Italy and Scott Karim will play Edmund in the Philip Frank’s directed King Lear starring Michael Pennington. In a year for Lear’s Thomas Coombes will be playing Oswald in Michael Buffong’s version for The Royal Exchange whilst Sévan Stephan begins rehearsals for Breakfast At Tiffanys which will tour prior to opening at The Haymarket Theatre, West End.

20150831-6-VerticalGavin Spokes will play Nicely Nicely in Chichester Festival Theatre’s West End transfer of the critically acclaimed Guys and Dolls playing at The Savoy Theatre. Ferdy Roberts returns to the Royal Court in the role of Jez in Plaques and Tangles which will be directed by Lucy Morrison in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. Michelle Bonnard will play Maxine in American playwright Marcus Gardley’s A Wolf in Snakeskin Shoes at the Tricycle Theatre directed by Indu Rubasingham whilst at The Print Room Richard Dempsey takes on the role of Edward in TS Elliot’s  The Cocktail Party directed by Abbey Wright.

Thomas Coombes will appear in a revival of Barbarians (for which he won an Offie in 2013), as Tooting Arts Club bring Barrie O’Keefe’s play back to the site specific former St Martins School of Art in central London. For Actors Touring Company, meanwhile, Farshid Rokey and Kriss Dosanjh join the cast of Martyr a story of a young radicalised Christian boy directed by Rahmin Grey. Robert Hands is currently in rehearsals for Mouthful at The Trafalgar Studios and Hayley Carmichael will appear in First Love Is The Revolution, a new play written by Rita Kalnejais’s to be directed by Steve Marmion for Soho Theatre.
Out of town Sara Powell plays Tituba in The Crucible at The Bristol Old Vic directed by Tom Morris; Jess Murphy joins the cast of ATG’s new musical The Choir directed by Dominic Hill at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow.Scott Karim plays Helmholtz in The Royal and Derngate’s Brave New World directed by James Dacre.

20150831-4-Square Alex Blake will play Torvald in A Dolls House directed by Rachel O’Riordan at The Sherman Theatre Cymru and Rose O’Laughlin plays Anna in a revival of Brian Friel’s Living Quarters at The Tobacco Factory.
Openings include Jodie McNee in Our Country’s Good at The National, Tom Edden in Measure For Measure at The Young Vic and Tafline Steen making her Broadway debut in King Charles III at The Music Box Theatre, NY.

On stage we are pleased to confirm that Tafline Steen will reprise her role as Jess in The Broadway transfer of the Olivier Award winning Charles III which will run at The Music Box Theatre this autumn. Jodie McNee, meanwhile, returns to The National Theatre where she will play Liz Morden in Nadia Fall’s revival of Our Country’s Good. Lisa Palfrey has started rehearsals for The Seagull at Regents Park which Matthew Dunster is directing in a new version by Torben Betts and Ferdy Roberts will transfer with Lampedusa, Anders Lustgarten’s new political elegy, which will be at Soho Theatre from the end of June. Chris Harper will play Benedick in The Globe’s Much Ado About Nothing with Max Webster directing, Robert Hands opens in Sunspots at Hampstead Theatre with Charlotte Gwimmer directing, Gavin Spokes returns to the West End in Headlong’s revival of 1984 and Richard Dempsey opens as Reggie in Rob Ashford’s Chichester staging of A Damsel in Distress.

On Screen

OnScreen200315Max Fowler plays regular Krispin Stockley in POWERS. The series based on the award winning comic books is a combination of noir police story and real world superheros from the producers of ‘Breaking Bad’ and premiers this month for Sony. Also premiering this month, Richard Teverson features as Lib Dem politician David Laws in Channel 4’s new political drama Coalition which details the days after the 2010 general election and the formation of the current government. Joe Sims is in BBC 3’s second series of Uncle and Geraldine Alexander is in ITV’s period drama Arthur and George. Over on Sky catch Cosima Shaw real time medical drama Critical and Joseph May in new comedy I Live With Models for Comedy Central. Meanwhile Robert Hands can be seen playing Henry in the BBC’s 7-part fantasy drama Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. Also for The BBC Thomas Coombes plays Stefan in the final series of Wallander opposite Kenneth Branagh whilst in the US Ken Bones plays regular Annas in the 12 part Biblical drama AD from Lightworkers Media, premiering Easter Sunday.  In UK cinemas Tom Edden plays The Lizard Footman in Branagh’s live action Cinderella released on the 27th of March and Jodie Mcnee plays Rosencrantz in The Manchester Royal Exchange’s Hamlet with Maxine Peake, in cinemas now.

On Film

Lisa Palfrey will join the regular cast of BBC2’s police corruption thriller Line of Duty which returns for a much anticipated third series. Also for BBC2 Jay Simpson plays Ernie in new 8 part comedy drama From The Cradle To The Grave written by Jeff Pope and based on the memoirs of Danny Baker. Natasha Gordon will play Pearl, Danny’s older sister in Danny and The Human Zoo a 90 minute semi autobiographical drama written by Lenny Henry for RED productions. Thomas Coombes will play Kieran Benson in CUFFS an 8-part police drama written and created by Julie Gearey for Tiger Aspect/BBC1. Meanwhile Richard Teverson reprises his role as Dr Ryder in series 6 of Downton Abbey and Joe Sims will feature in the third series of Endeavour directed by Sandra Goldbacher for ITV/Mammoth Screen.

On Stage

Richard Dempsey will play Reggie Byng in Damsel in Distress at Chichester Festival Theatre this summer. The musical with songs from George and Ira Gershwin is based on the novel by P.G Woodhouse and is well-known from the popular 1937 comedy film. Daniel Rabin joins the cast of the rarely staged King John directed by James Dacre for The Globes ‘Season of Plenty ‘and Scott Karim will play Morocco in The Merchant of Venice directed by Jonathan Munby also for The Globe. Ferdy Roberts plays Stefano in Anders Lustgarten‘s political two hander Lampedusa at The Soho Theatre directed by Steven Atkinson.

Autumn-ShootsRobert Hands joins the cast of Partners in Crime playing Mr Minton. The BBC drama starring David Walliams and Jessica Raine as Tommy and Tuppence is directed by Ed Hall and forms part of the celebrations for Agatha Christie’s 125th anniversary year. For Channel 4, Richard Teverson plays Liberal Democrat David Laws in the one off political drama Coalition. Written by James Graham and directed by Alex Holmes the story charts the meteoric rise to government and power of Nick Clegg. Stefan Kalipha will begin shooting new six part drama River. The crime series starring Stellan Skarsgård as Detective Inspector John River is written by Abi Morgan and is being produced by Kudos for BBC1. For Lightworkers Media Ken Bones is playing the biblical character Annas in AD a 12 part series charting the birth of Christianity currently filming in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Kriss Dosanjh reprises his role as shop keeper Mr Sandu in Warp’s BAFTA award winning drama This is England 90 following its characters a decade on. Meanwhile Thomas Coombes plays opposite Kenneth Branagh in the BBC crime series Wallander, Joe Sims joins the cast of Uncle the hit BBC3 show as it returns for a second series and Geraldine Alexander films ITV’s 3 part drama Arthur and George. In film, Pooky Quesnel shoots the screen adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s bestselling parody novel Pride Prejudice and Zombies. Lisa Palfrey has just wrapped on the Welsh language film adaptation of Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood directed by Kevin Allen and Stefan Kalipha plays Frances De La Tour’s elusive boyfriend The Maharajah in Disney’s Through the Looking Glass a sequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 film Alice in Wonderland.

Lisa Palfrey plays Maureen in PRIDE Matthew Warchus’s cinematic directorial debut based on a true story of the lesbian and gay communities’ unlikely allegiance with the striking miners of the Welsh valleys in 1984. A brilliant ensemble cast makes this a must see film this Autumn. Released in UK cinemas on September 12th.

200914-Four-SquareTom Edden plays painter CR Leslie in Mike Leigh’s Mr Turner biopic, already a big hit in Cannes, it’s released in the UK end of October. Catch Max Fowler in action crime thriller Rage opposite Nicolas Cage also released September. Jay Simpson plays ex-football hooligan Neil in The Guvnors, a violent thriller set amongst the clans and firms of South East London in UK cinemas now. Robert Hands features as the hospitals ‘Elegant Lady’ in Stonehearst Asylum. Based on an Edgar Allen Poe story the period horror film will be in UK cinemas from October 24.

 

Television

Our Zoo, the true story of the Mottershead family who established Chester Zoo in the 1930’s starts this week with Hayley Carmichael playing village shopkeeper Camilla Radler. The six part series is on BBC1, Wednesday’s at 9pm.

This month also sees Naomi Bentley playing regular Angie in Sky Living’s Mount Pleasant series 4. Thomas Coombes and Benjamin Davies will appear in Suspects as the popular unscripted drama returns for a second series catch it on demand and on Channel 5 Wednesday nights from 10pm. Coming up Molly Logan and Farshid Rokey feature in Our Girl a new 5 part drama set against the backdrop of the British Army’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. And Ken Bones reprises his role as Melas in Atlantis, the BBC’s hugely popular drama, returning Saturday evenings.
